The literacy gap in Africa is wide. The main countries in the Sahara are those that have a large proportion of the population that cannot read. The least literate population lives in Niger 19%, the absolute leader in this negative ranking. It is followed by Guinea with 30%, Somalia and South Sudan with 32%.
At the other extreme, the countries with the most people who can read are the countries bordering the sea or ocean. First of all, Equatorial Guinea with 95% (there are countries in Europe where they cannot reach this percentage), South Africa 94%, Libya with 91% remaining literate population from the time of Muammar Gaddafi.
