A wave of criticism against a supermodel who chose alternative cancer treatment, and yet she was cured

Elle-Macpherson

Elle Macpherson, 60, faces backlash after revealing she treated breast cancer using a ‘holistic approach’, ignoring advice from 32 doctors: ‘She’s so irresponsible!’ Elle Macpherson has revealed she treated her breast cancer using a “holistic, alternative approach”. The supermodel was diagnosed with HER2-positive estrogen-sensitive ductal carcinoma, a type of breast cancer, after a lumpectomy [a procedure to remove abnormal breast tissue along with a piece of surrounding healthy tissue] seven years ago.

Doctors suggested a mastectomy with radiation, chemotherapy and hormone therapy, as well as breast reconstruction.

But Elle decided to take an alternative route and brought in a team of specialists to develop a plan that “took into account both the emotional and physical factors associated with breast cancer”.

The model rented a home in Phoenix, Arizona, and spent eight months there, regularly seeing two therapists, a chiropractor, a holistic dentist, and a doctor who claims she cured her own cervical cancer with juice cleanses and “detoxes.” Elle is now in clinical remission, meaning she has no signs or symptoms of the disease.

Fans have accused the supermodel of being “reckless,” while cancer doctors have said she is promoting “dangerous” treatments that could “cost women’s lives.” X users wrote: This is shockingly irresponsible of Elle Macpherson. She was lucky that the lumpectomy removed all the cancer cells and the cancer did not spread, but to suggest she has “cured” the cancer as a whole is incredibly reckless. This is a worrying message, I am not against holistic therapy and anything that helps you calm down, but if they had not removed all the cancer, I am not sure about remission. Unfortunately, cancer is unique to each person. Liz O’Riordan, co-author of The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer, said: We know that breast cancer can come back in 10, 20 or even 30 years, Elle is still very young.

Everything that doctors offer today is based on many years of experience and data from hundreds of thousands of patients. We know it works. We know it is safe. We know what happens if it doesn’t work. Elle has had naturopathic holistic dentistry, chiropractic care, an alkaline diet, but there is no evidence that any of it works. Holistic medicine means avoiding root canals and removing fillings, but there is absolutely no evidence that this causes cancer.

Meanwhile, Professor Karol Sikora, former head of the World Health Organization’s cancer program, said: I have had several patients who have done this. It is simply impossible to fight cancer this way. It always ends badly. Complementary medicine is wonderful, but only when used alongside conventional treatment.

There is a risk that the cancer will grow and enlarge in the breast, spread to the lymph nodes under the arms, and then through the bloodstream to the liver and lungs. This is a normal picture for breast cancer.
