A leading world expert reveals the worrying reason for the sharp rise in bowel cancer in young people: a childhood infection found in the guts of one in five people.
It’s a phenomenon that has puzzled doctors around the world: bowel cancer, usually a disease of older people, has increased by 50 per cent in people in their 20s, 30s and 40s over the past 30 years.
Now a new theory to explain the trend has been put forward in a debate between two of the world’s leading cancer experts. A common childhood infection could be partly to blame for the rise in young people’s cases of the disease, known in the US as colon cancer, leading experts have suggested.
In an interview with The Health Foundation, Dr Charles Swanton, chief clinical officer at Cancer Research UK, revealed “new evidence” showing that a type of E. coli bacteria that children contracted as children may “contribute to at least some of the cancer process”.
Evidence for this comes from fellow oncologist Dr Kimmy Ng, a US specialist in colorectal cancer in young patients. She said the E. coli findings were “really provocative and very interesting.” “It’s consistent with our hypotheses that any exposure or trigger is likely to occur early in life.” She added that thyroid cancer is also on the rise, as is kidney cancer, which is also on the rise in younger people.
