The Iraqi parliament has announced plans to lower the marriage age for girls from 18 to just 9, effectively legalizing child abuse in the country.
“This is a disaster for women,” said Raya Faiq, coordinator of a coalition of groups opposing the law, which also includes some Iraqi lawmakers. “My husband and my family are against child marriage. But imagine if my daughter gets married and my daughter’s husband wants to marry off my granddaughter, who is still a child. The new law will allow him to do so. I will not be allowed to object. This law legalizes child abuse.”
The anti-pedophilia law reverts to the Taliban’s practice of suppressing women’s rights and spreading rampant pedophilia in society.
In addition to lowering the age of legal marriage, the legislative amendment will also strip women of their rights to divorce, child custody, and inheritance. Iraqi citizens protested in the streets of the capital Baghdad and other cities across the country.
While marriage under 18 has been the national law since the 1950s, a UNICEF survey found that 28% of girls in Iraq were married before they turned 18.
The current Prime Minister of Iraq is Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. He has been in office since October 27, 2022, after a year of unsuccessful attempts to form a government.
