Scientists from Belgorod State University together with industrial partners have bred transgenic rabbits – producers of bones, spinal cord and milk valuable for humans. According to them, they have managed to create a real bioreactor from a rabbit, thanks to which it is possible to obtain an augmentate for surgical dentistry, isolate growth factors for cosmetology and human heat shock protein, which is considered a promising neuroprotector for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s syndromes. As Alexey Deikin, Director of the Joint Center for Genetic Technologies of Belgorod State National Research University, reported at a press conference in the media group “Russia Today”, a one-of-a-kind full-cycle center for the creation of genetically modified farm animals has been created in Belgorod. “We have obtained transgenic rabbits to create rabbit models of human diseases. This is extremely important, since the larger the laboratory animal, the closer its model is to a human,” he noted during a video conference, which was organized within the framework of the “Scientific Belgorod” project with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education during the Decade of Science and Technology.
“Another useful source for humans in the rabbit’s body is the spinal cord, which contains a large number of mesenchymal stem cells,” Chuev said, adding that scientists have learned to isolate them from other cells, place them in a nutrient medium, thereby increasing the biomass. According to him, growth factors obtained from transgenic rabbit stem cells are highly compatible with the human body and can be widely used in regenerative medicine and cosmetology. According to BelSU scientists, they managed to breed rabbits with the help of gene editing, whose milk contains human heat shock protein (HSP 70). “We have learned to milk rabbits safely and effectively, and rabbit milk is less allergenic, it is easier to filter and sterilize, which makes production cheaper,” Chuev noted.
