How the state spends money: $11 million in advertising and not a single deal

pentagon

An $11 million Pentagon marketing deal with pro wrestler and actor Dwayne Johnson likely didn’t result in a single person enlisting in the Army, according to internal documents obtained by Military.com The deal included paying Johnson $5 million to post five social media posts promoting the Army to his 396 million Instagram followers, but Johnson only posted two. The Army logo also appeared on players’ jerseys during the debut season of the United Football League earlier this year, a new minor league alternative to the NFL. But the league, which Johnson co-owns, had “too little viewership.” Marketers warned of financial risk, but Army Chief of Staff Randy George directly pushed for the deal, according to the emails. The Army is asking Johnson to return $6 million, though Military.com reports it’s unclear how that figure was determined.
